"It's rewarding to know that our work in this program will result in better understanding of water in our environment," said Rich Sorelle, vice president and general manager of the Exelis Integrated Electronic Warfare Systems business. "We are proud that NASA and Ball Aerospace continue to count on Exelis to provide complex millimeter wave solutions for their critical missions."
Exelis designed, developed, tested and delivered the first ship set, which consists of passive receivers covering frequency ranges between 10 and 183 GHz plus command and power conditioning units, to Ball Aerospace for integration and test earlier this year.
The next GPM satellite is expected to be launched in low earth orbit in 2014.
GPM, initiated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), comprises a consortium of international space agencies, including the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales, Indian Space Research Organization, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites.
