In a speech read on her behalf, the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Ms Shirley Ayitey, said research has shown that the major cause of climate change and global warming is the emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide from the anthropogenic activities of humankind.
Ms Ayitey said the issue of climate change as a major cause of biodiversity loss confronting the world today cannot be ignored and that its impact on agriculture and livelihood will be very devastating if appropriate measures are not taken to avert the catastrophe.
She indicated that the environment today is confronted with diverse types of pollution causing contagious/preventable sicknesses and disease outbreaks, and natural disasters such as floods, landslides and mudslides which are destroying lives and properties.
The Minister commended POTE for its awareness creation campaign and projects aimed at environmental preservation, sustainable agriculture, and the promotion of plant-based and eco-friendly products to protect the biodiversity and entire eco-system for the safe existence of all.
In his address, the Founder and Executive Director of POTE, Mr Frederick Mensah, disclosed that POTE, which was registered in April 2010, have the ultimate vision of becoming one of the key players in environmental preservation and biodiversity conservation in Ghana and Africa at large.
Mr Mensah noted that climate change and environmental pollution are no longer an issue of mental illusion but a problem of global reality, the consequential effects of which cannot be ignored.
He called on stakeholders, organisations, corporate bodies, donors and volunteers to join in the fight against the menace of environmental degradation to achieve the vision of bequeathing a healthy and robust world for the young and unborn generations.
