When a domain is relatively new, the terminology is often imprecise, and many different words many be coined and used by different organizations and individuals with none of them realizing that they are talking about essentially the same thing. This is substantially true for the use of Digital City and SDI as applied to urban environments. |

Today the discussion surrounding maps and cartography is growing. The Internet is allowing more people in different places to experience map use digitally through a wide variety of devices. This use is creating questions about maps, mapping and cartography. Editors Martin Dodge, Rob Kitchin and Chris Perkins have gathered togather a collection of contributors, each writing about the changing nature of maps, cartography and their use. The book 'Rethinking Maps - New frontiers in cartographic theory' is not only about mapping today, it describes where mapping might be in the future and provides insightful considerations for thinking about the many changes happening in the pursuit of cartography. |

The HP - Press Event 2009 was recently held in Barcelona, Spain. The two-day event included a tour of the Institute of Advanced Architecture (Iaac) in the center of the city accompanied by formal presentations from members of the HP Research Print facilities in nearby San Cugat together with a tour and presentations at those facilities. The event highlighted HP's move from being a print company to become a design communication company.

The non-profit California First Amendment Coalition (CFAC) sued the county of Santa Clara, California in 2006 over the fees they charge for their GIS parcel basemap data. The long battle ended a few months ago, with the court ruling that the county has to end their high fees for data, and pay attorney fees of $500K. V1 editor Matt Ball spoke with Bruce Joffe, of GIS Consultants in Oakland, Calif., a key advisor to the Coalition.
