PERSPECTIVES
What are the implications of model-based design for the geospatial community?

"The community of architecture/engineering/construction (AEC) specialists is undergoing a dramatic evolution toward model-based design. The concept and tools of Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a paradigm shift for the AEC community as it breaks free of the drawing-oriented design process toward an intelligent model that informs all phases of a building’s life and is acted upon by all of the disciplines that are involved in the process. BIM is basically a GIS for a building — introducing a database to store all details and components of the building, the domain knowledge of a team of collaborators, and the ability to query and analyze this information for a streamlined construction process and more efficient and effective structures."

- Matt Ball, editor The Americas/Asia Pacific

Beyond Visualisation: Intelligent City
Planning and Management

3D visualisation models have a variety of applications in geography and urban studies, including site location analysis, emergency facilities planning, design review and marketing. A pressing problem facing many of these models is their general inability to engage the vast majority of their users and the people whose lives they influence in a meaningful and intuitive fashion.

“Qua vado illic es”: A Quest for Spatial Literacy

Sowing the seeds of geographic literacy often finds rocky, uncultivated soil. One need only review the findings of the latest study conducted by Roeper Public Affairs to appreciate the level of spatial ignorance among young Americans. The suitability of geographic information systems (GIS) as an effective tool to remediate this problem has been well-documented since the 1980’s. And yet, GIS is terra incognita for the vast majority of social science teachers, who rarely enroll in geography courses for certification. In 2001, I decided that if GIS was to work its magic in my school, I would need to take the lead.

Digital Cities, SDI and the GeoWeb
ron_lake_thumbWhen a domain is relatively new, the terminology is often imprecise, and many different words many be coined and used by different organizations and individuals with none of them realizing that they are talking about essentially the same thing. This is substantially true for the use of Digital City and SDI as applied to urban environments.

    AU 2009 Urges Model-Based Opportunity
au_logoAutodesk University 2009 took place in Las Vegas, Nevada from Dec. 1-3. This year's event attracted roughly 6,000 people to the live event, and 16,000 to a simultaneous online broadcast of the content. The event theme, "Learn. Connect. Explore," highlights some of the advantages of the in-person experience, but with the economic and environmental benefits, the online version is likely to grow in subsequent years. With economic pain widespread among the AEC community, the emphasis was placed on the benefits of innovation and for a revamped design/build process that moves us further toward integrated design.

    INTERVIEW
    Empowering Students Using GIS

michael_gould_esri_75ESRI has always invested heavily into GIS education. That has included both the toolset as well as the study of geographic information as a science. The results have been impressive, not only in terms of financial growth for the company but the numerous research efforts, education events, books published and conference-workshops. Building GIS capacity and community is truly an ESRI goal. Dr. Michael Gould has recently been hired as Director of Education, Industry Solutions for ESRI. Vector1 Media editor Jeff Thurston interviews him on a number of GIS education related topics.

thumb_armin_gruen75Photogrammetry continues to evolve and today the study of photogrammetry remains important. Armin Gruen has previously served as Head of the Chair of Photogrammetry at the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry, Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zuerich, Switzerland. V1 Magazine editor Jeff Thurston interviewed him recently to learn about his life long passion of photogrammetry, the beginnings of what would become the CyberCity company and his work as one of the original members of the Board for Digital Earth.
