PERSPECTIVES

What would it be like to have a digital memory of place?

"Now that we’re approaching the means to capture and distribute highly detailed digital realities, it got me thinking more conceptually about a digital memory of place. This goes beyond the idea of a geographic information system that incorporates time for temporal analysis, toward what our digital memories of place might become."

Economy of the Spatial Data Infrastructures

Are spatial data infrastructure (SDI) worthwhile? A survey was made of users for a Geoportal in Spain recently. The feedback results were tabulated for 80 users (65 Catalans) of the Geoportal IDEC and its services provides an important glimpse into the value of SDI.

WHITE PAPER: Extending 3D Models Beyond Application Dead Ends

We are quickly moving toward a world where intelligent 3D models will interface with sensor systems for a realistic, up-to-date picture of our world. But for this vision to become a reality, we need compatibility and connectivity between different tools, data types and data models. Vector1 Media has partnered with Safe Software to explore this interoperability between 3D data formats.

Micro-Location Overview: Beyond the Metre...to the Centimetre
thumb_steven_feldman60.jpgAdvances in tracking and location technologies are enabling new application development. These applications can be found in environmental, utility, transport and other industrial applications. Many new approaches are being developed for more personal and local use and these applications include in-store location, hospitals, airports and inside buildings. In this column Steven Feldman takes a look at some of these applications and provides his unique views on some of the recent developments.

   Soil Data Goes Global

hempel_jon_thumb.jpgThe global soil mapping effort aims to update and catalog the world’s soil information accurately within one clearinghouse called GlobalSoilMap.net. V1 Editor Matt Ball spoke with the North American coordinator of this effort, Jon Hempel, Co-Director-National Geospatial Development Center, Soil Business Area Analysis Chair at the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Morgantown, West Virginia.

  Tracking Ships Around the Globe
Photo_RichardProud_70.jpgjulian_longson_60.jpgOcean going ships are not presently required to carry tracking devices, but renewed interest in safety and security issues are generating growing interest in knowing where these vessels are located. This poses many challenges because a system needs to be developed that integrates this information internationally, yet, remains sensitive to the needs of individual countries. Vector1 Media editor Jeff Thurston interviewed both Richard Proud (left) of ComSine Ltd. and Julian Longson (right) of Pole Star Space Applications Ltd, two companies that are developing this capability.
