PERSPECTIVES

"Education plays a key role in the development of a digital city. New technologies, new approaches, changing social patterns and improved infrastructure are important aspects of a digital culture. The journey is already under way and we can see parts of it in terms of geospatial products and services as well as communication technologies. But for the highest levels of digital cities to take shape will also require suitable policies, funding and commitment." - Jeff Thurston, editor Europe, Middle East & Africa

Leveraging Opportunities in Difficult Times: Merging Application Development with Projects

The 2007 Oregon Legislative Assembly passed House Bill 3337 requiring the Cities of Springfield and Eugene to establish separate Urban Growth Boundaries (UGBs) by December 31, 2009. Facing budget cuts, staff reductions and ever-increasing demands for geospatial services, the City of Springfield, Oregon, automated complex procedures while supporting citywide urban analysis, and accomplished the task ahead of time and under budget.

EVENT REPORTS

Spot Image International Conference 2009 - Toulouse, France

thumb_spotimage.jpgSpot Image has been building and operating satellites since 1986. The company can point to a large archive of 20 million satellite images covering the planet and several operating satellites currently together with partnerships adding imagery from KOMPSAT, FORMOSAT and ENVISAT. Recently the company's shareholder structure changed as EADS Astrium assumed majority ownership. This has resulted in a larger company under that name with Spot Image joining Infoterra to form a earth observation working group. These changes have compelled the group to offer advanced web services for its products and services in addition to other changes. Vector1 Media editor Jeff Thurston reports in the first part of the conference coverage.

Beneath the Surfaces: The Hidden Elegance in Parametric Design

thumb-hidden-design-120.jpg

So, what's the fuss over all of this 'parametric design' or 'computational design', you ask? Or, really, isn't the honeymoon over for yet another provocative shape and how to apply efficient facets of a beautiful surface onto a new building? Better yet, shouldn't there be more to 'parametric design' in the overall design process – especially given today's economic and environmental climate? Architect Don Chong attended the recent Bentley SmartGeometry conference in San Francisco and writes about the many impressions and thoughts it generated in this first of a two-part article.
INTERVIEW
3D Holograms and the Potential for Holographic Display

klug_michael_thumb.jpgThe ability to track change over time within a geospatial context has long been a compelling challenge. The primary limitation is the amount of data that needs to be captured, analyzed and visualized. V1 Editor Matt Ball spoke with Mark L. Feldman, CEO and president of Space-Time Insight about the successful approach that his company has developed, and the many interesting problems that can be solved with this level of insight.
