PERSPECTIVES

Which Geospatial Technologies Will 3D GIS Impact?

"Many geospatial technologies will be impacted by three and four dimensional geographic information systems (3D GIS). Some technologies like global positioning systems (GNSS), remote sensing and laser based technologies will enjoy a thrust forward as new forms of data capture, management, analysis and representation are supported through thinking about applications in 3D. Visualisation will be significantly impacted because 3D and 4D analysis will propell new representations into the limelight. We are truly entering a new phase of exploration and discovery in the geospatial sector. " - Jeff Thurston, editor, Europe, ME and Africa - This email address is being protected from spambots. Moving to the Big City

The development of digitally enabled cities is receiving a great deal of attention in the geospatial and design communities and the creation of building information models (BIM) is harnessing the ideas, creativity and needs of architects and engineers. To accelerate the take-up of 3D design in support of digital cities the software LandXplorer combines CAD and GIS data. Meanwhile 3ds Max Design software is supporting architects to meet their digital design workflows. Neil Brooker explains how new software development is helping to enable the digital city to become a reality.

Identification of Hydrothermal Altered Zones for Mineral Exploration

Commercial mineral exploration during the past two decades have increased manifold due to relaxed mining policies and the growing economies of third world countries. Mineral prospectors are constantly on the lookout for newer technologies which can help them identify mineral reserves in a quicker timeframe and at reduced costs. One such technology that is being widely used during reconnaissance and preliminary prospecting is integrated geospatial technology and remote sensing.

About 1000 people attended the English speaking event which is combined with the Deutsche language AGIT 2009 event. GI Forum is a GIScience focused event with a strong educational component and AGIT is oriented around applications involving new discovery, research and education involving geoinformatic related technologies.

INTERVIEWS
Exploring the Status and Importance of the GeoWeb

ron_lake.jpgThe concept of the GeoWeb has been gaining ground for some time, but the full vision is only just beginning to be addressed. V1 editor Matt Ball spoke with Ron Lake, founder and president of Galdos Systems, and creator of the GeoWeb Conference, about the current status of the GeoWeb, and priorities for current development efforts.

Interview: Satellite Imagery for China, Australia and Beyond

rob-lees-75.jpghugues-pavie-75.jpgSatellite imagery continues to grow in importance as a primary source of intelligence for decision making across many industries. V1 Magazine editor Jeff Thurston interviewed Rob Lees, Managing Director for Spot Image Australia (left) and  Hugues Pavie, Managing Director for Spot Image in China (right) in Toulouse, France recently. Both regions are experiencing considerable growth in their respective markets and account for significant levels of overall Spot Image revenue.

The Senses of Touch: Haptics, Affects and Technologies (2007)

By Mark Paterson

Examining the role of touch in art, memory, digital design, developmental psychology, experiences of visual impairment, and tactile therapies, The Senses of Touch demonstrates the varieties of sensory experience, and explores the diverse range of our "senses" of touch.

Artifice and Design: Art and Technology in Human Experience (2008)

By Barry Allen

This book starts from the conviction that art and technology must be treated together, as two aspects of a common, technical human nature.

By Paul A. Fishwick

In this book, key scholars and practitioners from art, design, computer science, and mathematics lay the foundations for a discipline that applies the theory and practice of art to computing.
