How do new safety systems in automobiles relate to sustainability?

"It’s not a stretch to compare individual personal safety at highway speeds to the dangers that our planet faces as the global temperatures rise and repercussions are felt. The comparison is designed to point to a number of developments in our acceptance and reliance on machine-based control for safety that can and should be extended to how we collectively approach the management of our environment. FEATURES
Moving to the Big City

The development of digitally enabled cities is receiving a great deal of attention in the geospatial and design communities and the creation of building information models (BIM) is harnessing the ideas, creativity and needs of architects and engineers. To accelerate the take-up of 3D design in support of digital cities the software LandXplorer combines CAD and GIS data. Meanwhile 3ds Max Design software is supporting architects to meet their digital design workflows.

Identification of Hydrothermal Altered Zones for Mineral Exploration

Commercial mineral exploration during the past two decades have increased manifold due to relaxed mining policies and the growing economies of third world countries. Mineral prospectors are constantly on the lookout for newer technologies which can help them identify mineral reserves in a quicker timeframe and at reduced costs.

EVENT REPORTS

ESRI/UC 2009: GeoDesign Promises a More Planned Future

uc2009logo.pngThe 2009 ESRI International User Conference took place in San Diego, Calif., from July 13-17. This year's event attracted more than 12,000 people this year, with the theme, "GIS: Designing Our Future". Sustainability was again a strong theme in the plenary session as well as throughout the conference program.

INTERVIEWS
Exploring the Role of Geospatial Tools for Urban Planning

greenberg_ken_thumb.jpgKen Greenberg, an architect and urban designer with his own firm Greenberg Associates, recently spoke at the GeoWeb Conference. Greenberg has worked on many large-scale and high profile projects, including Boston’s Crossroad Initiative for the Big Dig and the Vision Plan for the District of Colombia. V1 Editor Matt Ball spoke with Greenberg about the role of geospatial tools and methodology in his work, and about the factors of sustainable planning.

Satellite Imagery for China, Australia and Beyond

rob-lees-75.jpghugues-pavie-75.jpgSatellite imagery continues to grow in importance as a primary source of intelligence for decision making across many industries. V1 Magazine editor Jeff Thurston interviewed Rob Lees, Managing Director for Spot Image Australia (left) and  Hugues Pavie, Managing Director for Spot Image in China (right) in Toulouse, France recently. Both regions are experiencing considerable growth in their respective markets and account for significant levels of overall Spot Image revenue. Applications are largely related to the land base and take advantage of the archived and new imagery derived through Spot Image satellites.

Exploring the Status and Importance of the GeoWeb

ron_lake.jpgThe concept of the GeoWeb has been gaining ground for some time, but the full vision is only just beginning to be addressed. V1 editor Matt Ball spoke with Ron Lake, founder and president of Galdos Systems, and creator of the GeoWeb Conference, about the current status of the GeoWeb, and priorities for current development efforts.
