In May 2009, Vancouver City Council passed a motion that embraces the principals of open data, open standards, and open source. As a result of the Open3 motion (so called because it covers open data, open standards, and open source), City staff began to put together a site to accommodate the free downloading of data.

Washington has always been forward thinking.When the state passed some of the most progressive renewable energy legislation in the United States in 2005 – Bills 5101 and 5111 – it was par of the course. The bill passing was prompted by a severe energy crisis in 2001, when the Columbia River experienced its lowest water levels in 60 years. The state decided it was time to diversity and become a leader in energy efficiency.

Geo-Communication and Information Design
thumb_brodersen_book75Lars Brodersen has written a book that describes what geocomunucation means and what it involves. In his view, geocommunication is much different than cartography alone. It includes a wealth of information pertaining to a location and seeks to intimately involve the sender and user into a dialogue of understanding that involves technology, conceptual models and basic common sense factors. This book has particular value to geodata and geospatial information users today due to the fact that it supports integrative knowledge and and the convergence of thought and technology toward better spatial understanding.

The sixth-annual Location Intelligence Conference took place in Westminster, Colorado from Oct. 5-7, with more than 250 people in attendance and a show floor that showcased 25 companies. The focus of this event, sponsored and produced by Directions Magazine, is largely on the business consumers of geospatial technologies and data, highlighting the trends that extend location-based information within enterprise information technology.

INTERGEO 2009 - Karlsruhe, Germany

thumb-intergeoINTERGEO was held in Karlsruhe, Germany from Sept. 22-24,  under sunny skies allowing for the 15,000 in attendance to participate in both indoor and outdoor displays of the latest geospatial technologies developed by international manufacturer's from 30 countries. At 25,000 square meters, INTERGEO remains one of the largest geospatial events on the planet.

Open Land Data Ensures Transparency

Bruce JoffeThe non-profit California First Amendment Coalition (CFAC) sued the county of Santa Clara, California in 2006 over the fees they charge for their GIS parcel basemap data. The long battle ended a few months ago, with the court ruling that the county has to end their high fees for data, and pay attorney fees of $500K. V1 editor Matt Ball spoke with Bruce Joffe, of GIS Consultants in Oakland, Calif., a key advisor to the Coalition.
