PERSPECTIVES
The Berlin Wall 20 Years - Through Geospatial Eyes

"I thought I would try something a little different this week given that the fall of the Berlin Wall will be remembered November 9. The 20th Anniversary will give rise to festive occasions both within Berlin and Germany in general, but it will also be a time for many other people internationally to think about the event. There have been many changes since the first time I went to Berlin in 1994, later moving there from Alberta, Canada in 2000. Here are some of my observations."

Quantifying and Analyzing Farm Sustainability
Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have released the Illinois Farm Sustainability Calculator (IFSC), an open-source, spreadsheet-based model capable of quantifying and analyzing various measures of environmental sustainability for any farm in the state of Illinois.

As humans, we have an innate and natural tendency to establish patterns and associations in our environment. Consider for a moment, the capability of the human brain to “process millions of visual, acoustic, olfactory, tactile, and motor data, and…the astonishing ability to learn from experience, generalize from learned rules, recognize patterns, and make decisions”.

Digital Cities, SDI and the GeoWeb
ron_lake_thumbWhen a domain is relatively new, the terminology is often imprecise, and many different words many be coined and used by different organizations and individuals with none of them realizing that they are talking about essentially the same thing. This is substantially true for the use of Digital City and SDI as applied to urban environments.

thumb-rethinking_maps75Today the discussion surrounding maps and cartography is growing. The Internet is allowing more people in different places to experience map use digitally through a wide variety of devices. This use is creating questions about maps, mapping and cartography. Editors Martin Dodge, Rob Kitchin and Chris Perkins have gathered togather a collection of contributors, each writing about the changing nature of maps, cartography and their use. The book 'Rethinking Maps - New frontiers in cartographic theory' is not only about mapping today, it describes where mapping might be in the future and provides insightful considerations for thinking about the many changes happening in the pursuit of cartography.
