Canada, the United States, Russia, Denmark and Norway met this week in Canada to discuss cooperative agreements for shipping and mapping the region. The group reiterated the intent for orderly resolution of any possible overlapping claims for mineral and oil and gas right in the region.
The five Arctic coast states also proposed creating an Arctic Regional Hydrographic Commission to coordinate mapping the Arctic seabed for safer navigation. Increasing pressures on the region for shorter shipping routes between Asia and North America must also factor in the potential damage from increased pressure.
