Balloon Flight Feeds Remote Sensing Coursework

by Matt Ball on April 10, 2011

A team of 18 students in the geography department at the Kansas University launched a weather balloon Saturday. The balloon snapped photos and collected data during its 20-mile flight in a project dubbed Geohawk for the department’s “Remote Sensing II” course. The students will spend the rest of the semester using the images and data for research projects, image processing and mapping.

The students contacted Olympus, and in a display of great corporate generosity, they sent an E-5 and accessories including the 12-60mm Zuiko lens, an E-PL2 to document the project, and a remote shutter.

You can see details on the assembly, flight testing, and other launch photos on the Geohawk blog page.
