Prime Minister Steven Harper has approved another $100 million for five more years of on-shore “geo-mapping” of Canada’s Arctic resources. The money comes in addition to $109 million that is currently being spent for mapping the Arctic ocean floor.
The priority of this effort is energy and mineral resource mapping, with geological models and subterranean maps as the primary map products. Also of concern is environmental impacts that could be wrought if these resources were exploited.
