China’s Soso Search Engine Adds Street View

by Matt Ball on December 28, 2011

China’s second most popular search engine, Soso.com, has launched a street-level viewing function to their maps.soso.com. This feature currently is only available for three geographies, but more collection is underway with more areas to be added. The street-level mapping function looks very similar to Google’s StreetView.

Unique to this offering is a night view that provides the context of a sign-lit street in the modern city of Shenzen, the headquarters of Tencent, which runs the search engine. Google has had much-publicized difficulties in the Chinese market, and while they have collected street-level images in Hong Kong and Taiwan, it is unlikely that they would be given access to mainland China.
