Costa Rica Aims to be Carbon-Neutral Country

The Costa Rican government is working on an ambitious plan to completely offset carbon dioxide emissions in the country by 2020. The government is going about this goal with a mix of laws, incentives, hybrid vehicles, clean energy and taxes on tourism. There’s a new certification system whereby businesses and tourists will be charged a voluntary tax to offset their emissions. The money will go toward conservation and reforestation.

But will the Maldives, a group of islands that NEED the world to go increasingly carbon neutral, and who JUST committed to spending $110m annually beat them to be the world’s FIRST carbon neutral country?
