Earth Networks, the operator of WeatherBug products and services, just announced yesterday an expanded focus on broader environmental observations and measurements. The organization has teamed with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography to expand their observations, first taking a closer look at global greenhouse gas (GHG). Earth Networks will invest $25 million of its private capital over the next five years to deploy and operate the initial network.
The organization will deploy new sensors on their weather monitoring stations around teh world, and will share the data with the research community, policymakers and private industry. The organization is marking this new endeavor with the creation of the Earth Networks Center for Climate Research at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
This network fills a vital gap as today there are only a few dozen continuous GHG observing locations. Earth Networks will initially deploy 100 GHG observing systems worldwide, beginning with 50 in the continental U.S., followed by deployments in Europe and other areas of the world. The density of the Earth Networks array will make it possible to quantify and map more localized GHG emissions and uptakes (sinks), and importantly, their changes over time.
