Eco-City in Portugal Expands on the Idea of City as Metabolism

Portugal has begun planning on a new ec0-city named PlanIT Valley that will be located near the town of Paredes. The $19 billion concept city proposes a centrally operated computer “brain” to control water processing and energy consumption, taking the idea of urban metabolism to new heights. The system of systems approach would revolve around an Urban Operating System, which runs many services in the cloud.

This public-private partnership is led by a firm called Living PlanIT, which aims to create a low-carbon city that also provides a European alternative to Silicon Valley. The new city could be built by 2015.
