The UK department of roads has invested £2.7m for 27 police forces across England to get 3D laser scanning technology for motorway crash assessments. The time of crash closures is said to be reduced by 39 minutes, because of the precise 3D capture of the scene.
The ‘economic disruption’ angle to this decision is a sign of the times, with budgets and economies closely scrutinized. The government estimates the time stuck on the roadway equates to a £1bn cost to the economy.
