Eye on Earth Noise Watch App

by Matt Ball on April 26, 2012

An Eye on Earth mobile-based application from the European Environment Agency (EEA) gives individuals an opportunity to sense the noise level around them, and aggregates all the citizens as sensors to derive broader noise maps of specific geographies. This addition of noise to existing Water Watch and Air Watch, gives citizens a suite of pollution monitoring and reporting tools. EEA reports that at least 100 million European citizens are exposed to damaging noise levels. as noise can be damaging to health and happiness.

These handheld apps provide both personal insight as well as a means to sense broader trends, contributing to the digital skin of our planet. EEA continues to innovate on new applications for sensing and citizen feedback, and are actively developing sensor networks to improve frequency and precision of inputs to keep track of our changing world.
