You may recall the world’s largest physical terrain model of British Columbia that was created as a tourist attraction. The Experience B.C. map, roughly the size of a tennis court, unfortunately failed as a sole attraction at Victoria’s Crystal Gardens.
The facility is now run by the city, with plans to turn it into an expansion of the convention centre across the street. The city needed a home for the huge map and found one at the Galey Farms agriculture-themed tourist attraction.
I had heard that there were some money troubles and that the attraction didn’t last long. I had hoped to see the full-scale map in person after seeing a much smaller version in the map gallery at ESRI/UC a few years ago. I’m pleased to learn that the map will live on for some time.
The team at Solid Terrain Modeling worked hard on this accurate and beautiful model, going to great lengths to get the details and the curvature of the Earth modeled correctly.
