Greenpeace Illustrates Ocean Trash Collection

by Matt Ball on January 23, 2008

greenpeace.pngI blogged earlier about the “Ocean of Garbage.” Today, Jeff sent me a link to a Greenpeace animation that shows ocean currents and the vortexes in the Pacific Ocean that collect trash. An animation shows the build up of plastic garbage from six months to six years. If you’re concerned about this phenomenon, you’ll want to check out this link.

Do you know if there is a similar animation for the Atlantic?

While there is a North Atlantic Gyre, it appears that it doesn’t collect garbage in quite the same way. There’s also some evidence that this circulation pattern is weakening. See http://www.nasa.gov/centers/goddard/news/topstory/2004/0415gyre.html
