IBM Expands Their “Smart Planet” Initiative with Partnerships

by Matt Ball on June 24, 2009

IBM’s vision for an instrumented, interconnected and intelligent world has just received a technological boost, with a new Green Sigma alliance that adds Johnson Controls, Honeywell Building Solutions, ABB, Eaton, ESS, Cisco, Siemens Building Technologies Division, Schneider Electric and SAP into the fold. The Green Sigma alliance is aimed at helping companies better understand their greenhouse gas emissions, energy, water and waste usage to improve on their efficiency and lower their environmental impact.

The technological heart of the solutions are real-time metering, advanced analytics and decision support dashboards that help companies lower their costs while reducing their environmental impact. This new alliance brings a broad range of tools together for such applications as sensor networks with logistics software for more efficient fuel use for transportation, and a line of solutions for green IT management, including a solution that networks signals from individual networked devices to aggregate and analyze energy use of large networks.
