IBM Launches CityOne, A Game for Building Smarter Cities

by Matt Ball on October 4, 2010

IBM has launched CityOne, a game that aims to raise awareness, and help address some of the challenges and solutions for building a smarter city. The mission is to solve business, environmental and logistical challenges. The challenges involve energy, water, banks and retail, with the aim to highlight IBM’s business process management, collaborative technologies, and service oriented architecture solutions.

CityOne is a “sim-style” game where players are tasked with guiding a city through missions that deal with real-world problems. The city is losing 40% of water to leaks, the cost of energy is increasing, banks need to be more customer centric, and retailers need to think in new ways about delivering goods to people.

This serious simulation game is ione in a series from IBM that have included INNOV8, RoboCode and PowerUp that are used by schools, businesses, museums and conferences. The success of these games centers on their effectiveness to teach new ideas and concepts to a new generation.
