Japan Loses Earth Observation Satellite on Tsunami Mapping Mission

Reports from Space News today indicate that Japan has lost their Daichi earth observation satellite while it was busy mapping the eastern coast Tohoku region for tsunami damage assessment. The satellite inexplicably lost power shortly after dawn, and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) holds out little hope for recovery. The satellite with its stereoscopic mapping sensor, radiometer and radar has been used for precise mapping missions for more than five years, and was built to last at least three.
