Just got an offer from National Geographic for a $15/year interactive edition for viewing on PC, Mac or iPad. The new digital format will include exclusive online content such as interactive maps and video. You can preview the online addition here.
One interesting thing that I noticed is that print ads weren’t included. I’m guessing that there’s a plan to charge advertisers a premium for inclusion in this version. Or could it be that the subscription fee completely supports the editorial?
I’m grabbing the subscription, with intent to use it on my iPad. I’m really liking that device for reading and movie watching, but not surfing the Internet. There’s already a fabulous National Geographic World Atlas application for the iPad that you can view in the video below. National Geographic has definitely embraced the iPad, and it’s great to see traditional print publishers look at different ways of delivering digital content.
