Nokia and Microsoft Take a Fresh Look at Maps

by Matt Ball on February 29, 2012

Nokia and the Microsoft Bing Maps team are working jointly on on a new map presentation. The new approach involves a simpler information presentation where the maps have fewer ‘intrusive objects, icons and signs’ and fewer colors, along with clearer fonts and graphics.

The maps present more detailed information as you zoom in, with a smooth swipe outward for greater context. With this simplified approach that also focuses on refresh rate, we’re seeing a shift toward presentation for mobile map use. Granted, there have been mobile map-centric approaches in the past, but with Nokia and Microsoft teamed, we can expect an all-new level of focus on the use of maps and geospatial data in the field. And with Google’s new focus on augmented reality, we can expect Microsoft and Nokia to be close behind with their own map overlay upon reality.

The new map design will appear first on maps.nokia.com, on m.maps.nokia.com.
