There’s an interesting story on Space.com about a secret technology mission set to launch today on behalf of the National Reconnaissance Office. While there’s little insight into the secret payload, other than speculation that it may be testing new radar or imaging sensors, there is a strong focus on the research and development efforts that are ongoing at the agency. The agency director Bruce Carlson, who became director in 2009, has recently spoken about renewing the agency’s commitment to science and technology programs. Next year’s NRO budget request will call for more science and technology funding, increasing the agency’s research budget back to historical levels, according to Carlson.
