Wired magazine has a story today about the DARPA solicitation for Soldier Centric Imaging via Computational Cameras (SCENICC). The outlined capabilities are a far-forward look at what augmented reality might become. Included in the specs are an ability for multispectral sensors, a 360-degree spherical view, the ability to 10x zoom in stereo, the ability to see in 3-D, the fusing of imagery from multiple nodes for both still imagery and video, and the display of maps to show where the enemy and ‘friendlies’ are.
From the article:
“the buzz-generating tool for the soldier of the near future is mapping technology, delivered onto a smartphone or some other handheld mobile device, at least judging from this year’s Association of the U.S. Army confab.”
Details on the opportunity for the soldier-scale Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) system to enhance awareness can be found here.
