Scripps Researchers Assess the Great Pacific Garbage Patch

by Matt Ball on August 4, 2009

A team of 30 researchers have embarked on a three-week voyage to study and document the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch.” The study will take a close look at the quantity and extent of small plastic particulates that circulate in what’s known as the North Pacific Ocean Gyre. The researchers will also look at the impact of the plastic on small fish, birds and plankton and other microorganisms.

The voyage is called Seeking the Science of the Garbage Patch or SEAPLEX, and you can follow daily posts on this website.
