Sun to Unveil Open Cloud Platform

by Matt Ball on March 19, 2009

Concurrent with the news that Sun may be bought by IBM, Sun has unveiled their Open Cloud Platform to compete with Amazon.com’s cloud serving and storage offerings. Sun’s Open Cloud Platform begins with server and storage services that are aimed at developers who need more capacity to produce applications. The site emphasizes interoperability and the open technologies of Java, MySQL, OpenSolaris and Open Storage.

Sun’s open cloud will have read and write capabilities from the browser window, a feature not offered by Amazon. The functionality on their Cloud Storage Service will use the WebDAV protocol for file access, allowing for multiple users to make multiple changes to the same file.

Small and nimble companies are likely to crop up around this new capacity. I’m imagining some very interesting interactive map features without the need for a huge infrastructure spend.

The Open Cloud Platform is aimed for release some time this summer.  Read more in this news release and  this Information Week story.
