Supermarkets at the Nexus of Sustainability Problems

by Matt Ball on February 27, 2008

There’s growing public outcry and government action against supermarkets in the United Kingdom. The current food distribution network is seen as the root of the problem for obesity, as a prime contributor of carbon emissions leading to climate change, and as the generator of mountains of garbage. Supermarkets have been declared as “unhealthy, unjust and unsustainable” by the Welsh government.

A study titled, “The Green, Healthy and Fair,” takes a close look at food distribution with an aim toward greener practices that include a reduction in over-packaging and a use of more recyclable materials. The study also suggests that the government promote and define local food, promote fair trade and work with industry to come up with sustainability standards.

The study is published by the Sustainable Development Commission, with the British Retail Consortium, the Competition Commission, the Food Climate Research Network and the Office of Fair Trading.
