The Climate Registry Maps State Performance

by Matt Ball on January 22, 2009

I learned about the Climate Registry during a recent interview that I conducted with Tony Gale of Ecology & Environment, Inc. The registry  has been growing steadily as a means to provide accurate and consistent greenhouse gas emission data throughout North America, and it also acts as a repository about performance.

I just took a tour through the map interface and was surprised to learn about the trends in my home state of Colorado: “Colorado’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2005 were 35 percent higher than in 1990 and under a business-as-usual scenario, are projected to grow to 81 percent above 1990 levels by the year 2020.”

I’m pleased that Colorado has enacted a 20% renewable energy by 2020 mandate for Colorado utilities as this will go a long way toward reducing emissions. But I’m surprised that I wasn’t aware of the phenomenal growth in greeenhouse gas output. Are you aware of your own state’s performance?
