The Golden Edge of Geospatial Technology

by Matt Ball on May 16, 2011

There’s a fascinating and in-depth feature in yesterday’s New York Times magazine about the gold rush underway in the Yukon. Today’s rush to uncover rich ore deposits is driven by the amazing jump in gold prices that now have peaked $1,500 an ounce. This story profiles the dogged determination of one couple, Shawn Ryan and Cathy Wood, that have parlayed their on-the-ground knowledge of the region into impressive gold discoveries and claim holdings at the forefront of a massive gold boom in the region.

At the heart of all of this prospecting and field work is the power of gespatial technology to document claims and to prospect using remote sensing technologies. After sending a Tweet out about the feature, I got a nice reply from the author Gary Isaac Wolf who also is a contributing editor at Wired. Aether shared this link to more background details and the lead image of the role computers are playing in this modern-day rush for resources.
