Today, Trimble announced the launch of a new service that provides large-format printed maps via MyTopo.com. The service provides tools for the custom design of areas in the U.S. and Canad with base map options, aerial imagery, and hybrid topo and aerial photo maps. The market aims at construction, surveying, agriculture and field research fields.
Offered are five large-format print sizes from 18″ x 24″ to 60″ x 84″. There are choices for paper stock including waterproof paper. The maps can be delivered rolled or professionally folded for use in the field. Prices for the maps start at just $9.95.
This new custom offering, combining digital map creation with physical map delivery, looks to be a great move to bridge cutting edge mapmaking with traditional field-based offerings. It’s a great strategy to expand the business as handheld devices have become commoditized, and new functionality isn’t necessarily spurring new business. It will be interesting to see how well this new offering does, with its long-tail low cost and high volume model.
