University of Washington Creates Environment College

The University of Washington regents have voted to create a new College of the Environment that will take a cross-disciplinary approach to environmental issues. The move will place six academic programs within the new college, but details are yet to be worked out on whether other disciplines will join in.

Regent Craig Cole commented that this move is overdue and that the current academic silos are inadequate to tackle the issues that face our planet today. Students have been very supportive of the move, given that climate change and environmental management are increasingly becoming the question of our time.

I’m enthusiastic about this move, and am eager to learn how computer models and systems will aid the collaboration between disciplines.
