NASA has posted a number of different activities online and is asking for input on their “Biggest Hits for the Home Planet.” With more than five decades of earth observation from space, the accomplishments are rather impressive. You can vote on such technologies as:
- the series of weather monitoring satellites that give us up-to-date forecasts
- instruments that monitor ecology and can measure chlorophyll in plants
- satellites that monitor and measure air pollution
- instruments that track energy in the whole Earth system
- sea surface temperature monitoring
- global positioning system satellites
- instruments that track polar ice sheet movement
- the tools that predict global crop yields
- measurements of sea level that have implications on weather and climate
- satellites and aircraft that measure our ozone layer
Each of these accomplishments are detailed on the polling site as part of a promotion for Earth Day. Weigh in on your favorite accomplishment, and stay tuned for the winner to be announced on April 22nd. As of this writing weather and GPS satellites are neck and neck for the lead.
