Awards for the Apps for Climate Action contest, a challenge of Canadian developers to create applications that raise awareness of climate change and use data sets from the B.C. government’s Climate Change Data Catalogue, were announced yesterday. Top prizes went to map-based applications.
The grand prize went to VELO, an applications that encourages businesses to reduce their greenhouse gas emission with an easy web-based dashboard. The People’s Choice prize goes to the map-based VanTrash garbage collection reminder application. Waterly, an application that takes your address and determines if there are any water restrictions for irrigating your lawn, won for Best of BC.
Overall, there were 17 applications that vied for prizes in this first-ever challenge that took advantage of BC’s open data policy to address a pressing issue.
