The World Ball is a cartographically-accurate basketball that is designed to teach geography. The project is the passion of George Mason University basketball coach James Larranaga and members of the department of geography. The idea for the ball came after discussions when the team made it to the final four of the 2006 NCAA championships, and has been developed through a partnership between the National Geographic Society and ESRI. The ball can be ordered online here.

President-elect Obama gave his economic address at George Mason University last week, and was presented with a ball. Perhaps we’ll be seeing more of this ball on the new presidential basketball court.
